Ban on the use of polystyrene
South Portland recently passed ORDINANCE #4-15/16, which bans the use of polystyrene food packaging.
Beginning on March 1, 2016, restaurants, cafeterias, coffee shops, food trucks and other food service establishments will be prohibited from distributing their products in polystyrene foam packaging. Instead, food packaging will need to be made of more environmentally friendly materials including paper, bioplastics, and/or rigid plastics. These materials are more environmentally friendly because they are recyclable and/or compostable.
