Ban on the use of polystyrene

South Portland passed ORDINANCE #4-15/16, which bans the use of polystyrene food packaging.

On March 1, 2016, restaurants, cafeterias, coffee shops, food trucks and other food service establishments were prohibited from distributing their products in polystyrene foam packaging.  Instead, food packaging needs to be made from environmentally friendly, and easily recyclable and/ or compostable materials such as paper, bioplastics, and/or rigid plastics.
