Welcome to Conservation Corner, created by the South Portland Conservation Commission
Please visit our Facebook Page for more information regarding issues the commission has or will address.

This week's topics:
  • We are excited to announce that conservation grants have been awarded to South Portland High School and Mahoney Middle School from the City’s Fresh Water Compensation Fund.  To see a description of what these awardees will be working on, please follow this link.

  • The Conservation Commission has been charged with creation of an open space plan to be included in the city’s comprehensive plan.  Funds have been designated for a professional facilitator, one experienced with the creation of open space plans in other municipalities, who will guide us in the process.  Part of the process is to appoint committee members.  We will be reaching out through this web site and other means to achieve a wide representation from our neighborhoods, businesses and other interested parties.  If you are interested in serving on this committee or know of someone who is, please follow this link to our Facebook page and you will find contact information.

  • The Conservation Commission strongly encourages everybody to avoid planting invasive plants.  There are a number of beautiful alternatives that are native to our state and sustain our eco-system, including those needed by our birds and pollinators.  Please follow this link to the University of Maine web site that lists many native plants and trees.  Have you heard about the new list of invasive plants that the State of Maine will soon prohibit from being sold?   Follow this link to the list.

IMPROVED COLLECTION SERVICES FOR HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS & ELECTRONIC WASTE ITEMS

Based on the amounts of waste items dropped off by the city’s residents, South Portland’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) & Electronic Waste (E-Waste) collection event held last November was an overwhelming success. Trucks for the waste collection service providers were filled to capacity and the level of public participation was considerably greater than any of the previous events for at least the past decade. The most common HHW items included paints, automobile fluids, cleaning supplies and pesticides while computers, TVs and stereos were the most abundant E-Waste items. Many of these products include corrosive, flammable or toxic substances that can pose risks to human health and the environment if disposed of improperly.

The success of the 2017 HHW/E-Waste event also created some real challenges due to the long line of traffic and extended wait times for many participants. In response to helpful feedback provided by participants, City officials from the Water Resource Protection, Public Works, and Sustainability Departments have been working in partnership to make improvements for future events. Most notably, the City will begin holding multiple collection events this year to provide more opportunities for residents to properly dispose of HHW and E-Waste items. All events will now be located at the new Public Services Facilities on 929 Highland Avenue and will continue to be free of charge and open only to South Portland residents. The 2018 schedule of events is as follows.
  • HHW Collection Day: Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 9AM – 1PM
  • E-Waste Collection Day: Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 9AM – 1PM
  • HHW Collection Day: Saturday, October 6, 2018 from 9AM – 1PM
