Conservation Corner
Why Go Native?
by: Cathy Chapman, Conservation Commission

I used to think that a bird feeder would be all that was needed to feed our shrinking bird population. I was wrong. Baby birds need native insects to live! 96% of our bird species here in Maine need them. Research has shown that most native insects would rather starve than eat a non native plant. Natives also provide cover and nesting material for birds and wildlife.

The answer then is simple. To keep our birds, our wildlife and ourselves from going extinct we need to plant native plants, shrubs and trees that native insects need to live. The bonus is that natives are low maintenance and cheaper to grow. They are born to live in our Maine climate and soil conditions. Once established, they need little or no extra fertilizer or watering. So do yourself as well as the environment a favor and GO NATIVE!

Join the South Portland Public Library as we bring back storytime on location at Bug Light Park in South Portland. Destination Storytime will be held on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. starting on June 15th and running for the foreseeable future as our outside program space will be out of commission this summer due to construction.

Destination Storytime will be meeting near the Liberty Ship in Bug Light Park and will include stories and songs. All ages are welcome, and we will have storytime blankets available to sit on but you are more than welcome to bring your own.

Thanks to our friends at South Portland Parks and Recreation are helping us take storytime on the road.

For more information, or if you have any questions about Destination Storytime, call Youth Services at 767-7660 x3 or visit SouthPortlandLibrary.com.
