KEY BOX LOANER PROGRAM

The South Portland Fire Department uses a secured key box system throughout the City via a vendor called Knox. They system allows one key to be carried (secured) on each department apparatus that can open Knox Boxes throughout the city. Inside these boxes, property owners place keys to their facilities allowing rapid access for the Fire Department as well as potentially saving thousands of dollars in door replacement costs had they not had these key boxes.

Previously, these boxes were primarily for commercial buildings and large housing complexes. Now the company offers residential boxes for purchase at a more reasonable cost. The department (through generous donations) has purchased a number of these boxes to be loaned out to residents for a temporary time  (30-60 days) for free. The idea is to allow the fire/medical teams to have rapid access to your residence during emergencies. For example, if a member of your family has surgery that will limit their mobility for a few weeks, a Knox box could be placed on your house to allow the fire department to gain entry in an emergency. If you are interested in this free service, please click on the form below and someone will be in touch with you soon.

You can also click on the Knox logo below for a link to the company website for more information on the boxes or if you would like to purchase one for your home permanently.

Boxes are subject to availability at time of request
