Street Safety for Kids
Pedestrian accidents are among the top causes of injury-related deaths of kids aged 5-14. Part of the problem is that many parents, caregivers and schools overestimate a child's pedestrian skills. Winter doesn't help, since streets may be dark on the way to or from school. The National Safe Kids Campaign and FedEx Express have launched a new campaign campaign at www.safekids.org and are sending volunteers to schools to offer tips, such as:
- Don't let kids under 10 cross streets alone; adult supervision is vital until a child has pedestrian skills.
- Have kids carry a flashlight and wear reflectors.
- Find the safest route and have kids follow it every day
