Buildings & Energy

Goal:

Our aim is to make all buildings in South Portland high performing buildings, focusing on energy efficiency, electrification of heating and cooling, and renewable energy. We will advocate for and develop programs and policies to help make this transition financially feasible for residents and businesses

Programs & Policies:

Electrify Everything!
Electrify Everything! is a City of South Portland-sponsored program that provides rebates on electric vehicles, lawn equipment, bikes, heating & cooling. This program is for South Portland residents with a household income up to 100% of Area Median Income (e.g. below $111,700 for a family of 4).

Benchmarking Ordinance
The Energy & Water Use Performance Benchmarking Ordinance adopted by City Council in October 2021 is a significant step towards incorporating sustainable development into the growth of South Portland.

Municipal Solar Projects
South Portland will increase the use of solar energy for municipal operations from 12% to 80% over the next several years to accelerate our transition to renewable energy and recognize the potential to save money. Onsite and offsite projects will build upon the existing municipal solar array on the City's capped landfill.

The City of South Portland helped the State develop an energy stretch code for new construction that sets a pathway to net-zero energy buildings by 2030. The City adopted the first stretch code, IECC 2021, which is in effect starting April 2022.
