The City of South Portland partnered with the City of Portland to develop a regional vision for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving the resiliency of our communities. Both cities adopted aggressive climate goals: to transition municipal operations to 100% clean renewable energy by 2040, and to reduce community wide greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 80% by 2050. Given the alignment of our goals and our close proximity, we have chosen to collaborate on the development of One Climate Future, a joint Climate Action and Adaption Plan.
Producing one plan emphasizes the shared nature of the planning process, and exemplifies a new model for cities working together to address climate change. The plan was developed through a stakeholder process that engaged individuals, community groups, and local businesses, and draw on the expertise of recognized regional leaders. Equally important as the actions it identifies, the plan is intended to mobilize community engagement and build support for climate action. This collaborative effort resulted in a transformative plan.
One Climate Future includes nearly 70 ambitious yet achievable strategies across four focus areas: buildings and energy, transportation and land use, water reduction, and climate resilience. These strategies will entail local action, regional partnerships, and state coordination.
