Direction from the City Council
Ultimately, the City Council opted to not repurpose the charge of the committee and directed the design team and M3C to proceed with the Mahoney renovation options which blend presented Option A1 plus some elements in Option B1 (such as geothermal technology to reduce energy use) and a number of elevators.
Based on the Council’s guidance, the Mahoney renovation would include the theater and current gym space for future public use, but the project would no longer include the Library, nor would it include the Police Station on the Mahoney site. Those facilities, and the Central Fire Station, will be handled separately by staff and Council. The goal is to hold a November 2026 referendum on the scaled-back Mahoney project. The design team and M3C will continue to develop the plan with this direction.
M3C will discuss this guidance and next steps at its meeting on Tuesday, February 24, 2026 at 6 PM. Join in person in City Hall Council Chambers, or watch live on Spectrum Channel 2 or online at https://bit.ly/SPCTV_Live.
